January Mosaic

I'm in a better mood now. Here's why:
Snow day tomorrow - Check.
Make taking pictures a habit - check
31 days and 31 pictures - check.
Survive January - check. :)

We are now 1/12th (or, if you prefer decimals, 8.4 %) of the way through.

Reminder to self:
This project allows me
  1. to be creative
  2. to see things differently
  3. to think about something other than work
  4. to stay connected to my friends
  5. to engage my brain in learning and then applying that new knowledge
  6. to have a positive outlet for thoughts and emotions
  7. to go to new places and try new things
  8. to view and appreciate others' work and creativity
  9. to form a new good habit
  10. to build my photo portfolio

Each photo, good or bad, contributes to the ultimate goal of becoming a better photographer.

31/365- Raindrops and yesterdays that become todays

Yesterday I Cried by Iyanla Vanzant

Yesterday, I cried.
I came home, went straight to my room,
sat on the edge of my bed,
kicked off my shoes, unhooked my bra,
and I had myself a good cry.
I cried until my nose was running all over the silk blouse I got on sale.
I cried until my ears were hot.
I cried until my head was hurting so bad
that I could hardly see the pile of soiled tissues lying on the floor at my feet.
I want you to understand,
I had myself a really good cry yesterday.

Yesterday, I cried,
for all the days that I was too busy,
or too tired, or too mad to cry.
I cried for all the days, and all the ways,
and all the times I had dishonored, disrespected,
and disconnected my Self from myself,
only to have it reflected back to me in the ways others
did to me the same things I had already done to myself.
I cried for all the things I had given, only to have them stolen;
for all the things I had asked for that had yet to show up;
for all the things I had accomplished, only to give them away,
to people in circumstances, which left me feeling empty,
and battered and plain old used.
I cried because there really does come a time when
the only thing left for you to do is cry. ...

...Yesterday, I cried.
I cried because I hurt. I cried because I was hurt.
I cried because hurt has no place to go
except deeper into the pain that caused it in the first place,
and when it gets there, the hurt wakes you up.
I cried because it was too late.
I cried because it was time.
I cried because my soul knew that I didn't know
that my soul knew everything that I needed to know.
I cried a soulful cry yesterday, and it felt so good.
It felt so very, very bad.
In the midst of my crying,
I felt my freedom coming,
Because...

Yesterday, I cried
with an agenda.

My yesterday was wonderful. Today...not so much. While I haven't sat down to cry with an agenda, by the end of the last class period, I was fighting hard to keep it swallowed. Those lovely little darlings can sometimes reduce me to tears.

30/365- 33rd birthday snapshots

Today is my 33rd birthday. With out the two women above, I would not exist. 1. I wouldn't have been born. 2. I wouldn't have made it through the rough times without them. On the left is Gram and the right is Mom.

To celebrate my birthday, my parents, 2 aunts, Gg (Gram), 2 cousins, and I went to dinner. After that we headed over to Gg's for our favorite game "bananagrams". We laughed so hard at silly things and I loved it! I grabbed my camera for a few candids. We were giggling so much it was hard to take "good" pictures (photographically speaking), but these are the best pictures to me. Real smiles and fun memories with people I love. It doesn't get much better than that.

29/365- All that glitters

The golden fingerprint. Inspired by my dear friend's golden experience, I decided to do a little digging (on the web and in the jewelry box). Here's a little of what I found.

"Egyptians considered the bright yellow metal to be divine and indestructible, a physical manifestation of the sun itself.
The pharaohs of Egypt insisted on being buried in gold, which they believed was the "flesh of the gods."
Aztecs used the word teocuitlatl -- "excrement of the gods" -- to describe gold. The Inca referred to it as the “sweat of the sun”. And on the periodic table, gold is represented by the symbol Au, from the Latin aurum, which means "shining dawn." By any name, gold has always been associated with wealth and power.

Gold is naturally beautiful and resists corrosion and tarnishing. It is also soft and malleable, which allows artists to shape the metal into almost any design.

Gold conducts electricity better than all other metals except silver and copper. And it doesn't corrode easily.

Gold may symbolize power, strength, wealth, warmth, happiness, love, hope, optimism, intelligence, justice, balance, perfection, summer, harvest and the sun.

Auras
GOLD: high spiritual vibration, integrity, respect, freedom, clear seeing, integrating spirit and body, creating as spirit
Clear gold metallic, shiny and bright: Spiritual energy and power activated and awakened; an inspired person.

28/365-M and M Rap?

I wrote a new grammar rap for my students. I have written quite a few songs for them already, but this one was probably the hardest. It was about using the preterite or imperfect tense. What made it a challenge was that I did it to an Eminem song. I now have a greater appreciation for his lyrics and his style. Trying to "spit rhymes" like he can is difficult! I guess that's why he gets the big bucks and fame. I don't think I'll quit my day job...yet:)

26/365-random phrases 2 - Liquid redundacy

"Liquid redundancy" inspired yet again by the random phrase generator.
I'm really tired and very busy this week (its birthday week in the family). I spent the evening with relatives from out of town and took lots of photos, but to avoid issues I'm not posting their pics on here. This is quick capture of diet coke cans on my kitchen floor.

Liquid -adjective
1. composed of molecules that move freely among themselves but do not tend to separate like those of gases; neither gaseous nor solid.
2. of, pertaining to, or consisting of liquids: a liquid diet.
3. flowing like water.

Redundancy–noun, plural -cies.
1. the state of being redundant.
2. superfluous repetition or overlapping, esp. of words.

25/365 - Peaceful

I had to get out to take some pictures today. I went to a park semi close to where I work. It was so peaceful and quiet. The snow was beautiful. You could see where birds and squirrels had run up and down by the trees. The sun was going down. It was just lovely.
I like the underexposure and contrast against the light hitting the lake. It feels kinda moody and yet inviting.

24/365- Icicles

I came home from work today to these beauties hanging off the carport. The first one is "ginormous" (this is less than 1/4th of it) and I don't think I've ever seen a crooked icicle like the 2nd.

23/365- Random Phrases 1

I used a random phrase generator and today's phrase was "orange reminder". This is my 365 calendar. I hang it on the fridge as a reminder of how far I've come and still have to go. I use an orange highlighter track my progress. Guess I can go mark off the 23rd. :)

22/365-So dirty

As a kids, my sister and I had daily chores (Hadn't my mother heard of child labor laws?). We also had "Saturday chores", which were never actually done on Saturday. They had to completed Friday after school if we wanted to do things with our friends that night or over the weekend. These so-called "Saturday chores" were things like dusting, scrubbing the bathrooms, mopping, mowing the grass, etc. Failure to comply would result in a revocation of privileges or allowance (or, dare I admit it, the belt!)
Anyway, today is Saturday and while I was starting to do chores, I noticed that I had tracked in some mud on my snow boots. grrrr. But instead of cleaning it up, I grabbed my camera. (I know ...right?) I thought the light hitting the floor looked cool and that pile of dirt was lined up with it. So,...here's today's picture.
Guess I better go clean that up and finish my chores.

20/365- part 2

Okay so the quality is bad. I'm posting this for the idea behind it, not the image itself.
I dug a hole in the snow and put a candle in it. Then I dug a second hole next to it and drew the heart.
I'm enjoying taking pictures, but I'm also feeling the week 3 frustration. This is more time consuming than I thought it would be. I feel like I'm getting better, but right now I'm worse, if that makes sense. I'm trying different stuff and I enjoy that. Sometimes, though, I just want to post a blurry, improperly exposed, boring subject picture with no commentary. Yet here I am posting another picture for the day where I tried to do something and well...I haven't shut up.
Now I will.

20/365 Snowday triptych

I was up way too early for a snow day. Guess that means more picture taking time! By 5:15am I had put on my long underwear and was outside. The nearly full moon and all the snow made it quite bright and peaceful.
Picture 1: My first view of the backyard. The snow was at the top of my snow boots.
Picture 2 : 10" of chilly white goodness and it was still snowing!
Picture 3: I love snow days!
I had some trouble again with white balance and exposure. It was frustrating, but with all of this snow around, I'll have plenty of opportunities to practice.

some days it feels like this

like you're using everything you have to try to hold it together. I'm sorry today was like that.

17/365 - I get my kicks

... on Route 66.
The Luna Cafe (built in 1924) is on old Route 66. Back in the day, it was apparently a pretty swanky place. Supposedly, gangsters like Al Capone would dine here (among other things).

Growing up I heard stories about how it used to be a gambling joint in the basement and a brothel up stairs. If the girls were in, they would light the cherry in the glass. Family legend says that the great grand mother of one of my cousins was a madam there.

But, Today the cherry is just painted on and the ruby colored glass and light are gone. Instead of a gangster's paradise, its the common working man's bar.
Personal note: When I finished taking the first picture, the camera fell off the tripod and landed lens first in the gravel. It dented the casing around the front of the glass and I think there are some small scratches on the lens. grrrrr. I took the second picture from inside my car. It seems to zoom okay still. I'll have to play with the camera some more to see if it can still focus properly.
Random thought: If it still works fine, I should go on a shooting spree (camera , not gun). That way, if it does break, I'll have some photos to post (since I can't really afford to buy a new camera right now.)

16/365 - The Good Old Days

My parents are members of a Classic Chevy car club. Today was the annual mechanical workshop that they host at my father's business/shop. He teaches the guys some repairs in the garage and Mom has the ladies in the office. The women have some sort of party (purses, jewelery, etc) and then they pack care packages for soldiers. Of course, there's also more food than everyone can eat.

Since its winter, most of the families bring their "civvies" (civilian cars aka: non classics), but a few will bring out the classics. I saw this one and had to take a few pics. (The '57 Chevy was my favorite as a kid.)

I used the HDRish feature on picnik then played with those lovely duo tones. I thought a diptych would be cool to show the headlight and the tail light/fin.

After yesterday's eagle experience, I felt pretty patriotic. Today's picture is of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, music for The Star Spangled Banner, and an early sketch of the front of the Great seal. E Pluribus Unum is Latin for "Out of many, one".

14/365 - first name "Ea" Last name "Gle"

My first eagle scouting excursion was a blast! I went with two fabulous friends (a couple of my besties) to the river then out to eat. I love hanging out with these girls!

We saw several eagles. M got so excited she couldn't stand it, literally! She took a tumble over some rocks with camera in hand. My first thought was "oh no, she's going lens first!" I know..I know...I'm a bad friend. But it gets worse. After I asked if she was okay (and saw the camera was at least still intact), she told me to "get the eagle"... so I did. I left my friend there in the mud to go take a picture! I know, right? Good thing P. was there to help M! 'Cause I'm not done.

M's "britches" were covered in mud! So I took a picture when she was walking ahead of us. and now I'm posting on my blog. Yes, today I was a horrible friend. This may be the final 365 post. She just might kill me! :) Anyway back to the eagles. I had to leave the land of optical zoom and head in to the rarely visited digital zoom territory. I don't like going there because the quality is not very good and my hands are too shaky to get a sharp image. I didn't have my tripod with me tonight to help stabilize the camera. Combine this with my lack of attention to the settings and you get what you see. These are the best of the eagle pictures. And they're not impressive. I don't mind though because I had a great time gabbin' and gigglin' with the girls (and JC the BM).

12/365 - Dozen Days

I didn't realize that today marks a dozen days of this project until I typed 12/365. Kind of funny since the picture for today was an egg. It was completely intentional. edit:I meant UNintentional

I'm not feeling all that creative tonight. I had made bacon and eggs and thought hmmm...wonder if I could make it look like the fried egg was coming out of the shell. So I cracked another one. maybe if I had let it cook a little longer it might have turned out the way I wanted. Oh well, here's the photo for the day.

11/365 - On Thin Ice

Snow day! That means a picture outing. I got all bundled up like a little kid and headed out.

Days like today remind me of my Grandpa. So I went to the cemetery where he is buried. This may sound weird, but I really like this cemetery. It is peaceful and beautiful. They have a pond with lots of ducks, geese, swans, and fish. It makes me happy knowing Grandpa has so much nature around him that he would have enjoyed.

I pulled up to the pond, a goose honked, and they came waddling up to me and the car. After I convinced the birds that I didn't have any bread, they went back to the pond and I started snapping away.

Only a small part of the pond wasn't frozen so the birds would walk out to it. I liked the idea of "walking on thin ice" (and it's not something round *he he*) so I took this shot. I think this little guy looks really cute with its one feather sticking up.

I have some trouble with getting the exposure and white balance correct in the snow. I've read a few articles about it and have tried the tips, but they still don't turn out quite right in camera. I had to do some editing and exposure adjustments on this shot. Oh well, guess I'll hope for more snow days so I can go practice. :)

10/365 - Musical Monday

This is a Siku (in Aymara) or zampoña (in Spanish). It is a reed flute, similar to panpipes, from the Lake Titicaca region of Peru and Bolivia. I picked this one up in Cuzco.

My good friend Melissa, over at Apple of My Eye Photo, suggested that yesterday's photo reminded her of an Aztec instrument. So I dug around in my pile of instruments and pulled this out for today.

She is also to thank for the editing tip. She mentioned using duotones in Photoshop. I haven't used duotones before and don't own photoshop, but Picnik has this feature. I decided to give it a try. I think I like it. Might have to use it again. :)

If you know me, you know I always have a drink close by - water or diet coke/Pepsi. What can I say? I'm a thirsty girl.

This a cold glass of ginger ale. I like how the bubbles lined up on the straw and the reflections in them. The perspective is pretty cool. It almost feels like you could get sucked up the straw. I'm really happy with how this turned out.

8/365 - laundry day

Keeping with the laundry theme for today. I love winter clothing. This is my new favorite sweater. Its a deep purple and quite soft.

I like seeing the fibers and some of the knitted stitches. You can see how red and blue make purple.
I'll save the critique for later. I find that if I wait and let the photo go "cold", my critique is more realistic. Also, I've been reading alot and learning things I didn't know that I didn't know. This is slowly starting to change both how I take the pictures and how I look at old ones.

7/365-the weekend

I wish I could say I'm going to have fun and exciting weekend. Alas, 'tis not so.
The "honey- do" list is getting long and since there's no honey, I guess that leaves me.

My mom called to inform me that Dad has decided to have the heating and cooling unit replaced in my house. They will have to have access to the laundry room (that's where the unit is) and ALL the vents in the entire house. While the men will be here they will be cleaning the all duct work.
Translation: Panic - then clean like a mad woman.

It looks like that huge pile of laundry (hence the photo) will finally have to be washed and the whole house cleaned. It needs to be done. I should have done it over the break. But I'd rather be out taking pictures. :)

I like this photo. I cropped it a smidgen and desaturated the color a little to give the jeans a more faded look. If I were to change anything, I might flatten out the zipper a bit and move the button hole part from the lower left of the frame. I would also move the light source or reposition the pants to lighten the lower right.

Ideas

After looking on the web (flickr groups/dicussion boards, photojojo.com forum, searches for 365 project ideas, etc.) I put together a few lists of ideas. Inspired by "Fix-it Fridays" and "Macro Mondays", here's one for themed days:

Monday – Macro, mosaic, music, mugshot, mission(go somewhere), manual mode, monochrome, musings, memories, moon, matrix/metering, model

Tuesday – try it, Technique, toy, textures, Tasty, true/truthful (personal truth or SOOC), twilight, tones/tints,

Wednesday- white, wordless (no commentary just let the photo speak), window, work, wigs, words, wacky, wake up, wip (works in progress), wide angle, walk arounds, working man

Thursday – thrifty, things I love, thirsty, third, thankful, theatrical, threads, thoughtful, throw things, three(thirteen, thirty, ect.)

Friday – Fence, family, photo booth, found items, food, flowery, fix it (editing skills or retakes), furry/feathery, freaky/fun, focus, favorite things, flash back (old photos with modern retakes diptechs, memories), farms, flash/exposure, fairytale, f/stops, fill light,

Saturday – sunrise, silhouettes/shadows, saturation, selfportraits, safari (outings), street life, Scavenger hunt, sports, sketches/drawings, slow exposure(long exposure),

Sunday – sacred, snapshot, show and tell, scenic/landscapes, city, socks, signage, SOOC, scale and perspective

5/365-dizzy

I learned a lot trying to do this shot.
1. Spinning coins do not like it if you try to predict where they're going and will almost certainly change direction if they sense you are anticipating a shot.
2. Spinning coins do not like to be confined in an area. They will jump off the background or out of a tray/plate and shoot across the room like a speeding bullet to avoid being captured.
3. Spinning coins DO like to make you cuss. Finding the sweet spot between the focus, ISO, aperture, shutter and additional fill light is a pain in the hind quarters.
4. It helps if you research how others did this BEFORE shooting 250 frames and giving up.

There is a lot I would do differently now that I've done some looking on the internet. However I was really happy to get this shot.

4/365 - twofer Tuesday

I can be so indecisive and non-committal. :) I had one photo planned for today and another came along. So you get both. Does that violate the rules?

It's the first day back from Christmas break that I had students. That means I spent my planning period making copies. This isn't the entire stack. I'm not done and some have been handed out already.
I snapped this one quickly while I was talking to a fellow teacher. I didn't take the time to change settings. It was shot in portrait mode. There was a yellow/orange tint on one side the papers, so I put them in black and white.

I like that you can see the student painted ceiling tiles in the background.

I would have taken the time to shoot in manual mode, but I didn't want to be rude. Given the quick capture, I think it turned out okay.

Part 2
A local Marine was injured in Afghanistan then died on Christmas eve. The main road is lined on both sides with American flags.
I stopped at lunch to take this picture. Since the road has four lanes and was busy, I couldn't get the angle I wanted. I still like the shot. Wanting to make the flags standout, I softened the background and put it in black and white. If I knew how I would have cleaned out the back ground a little. Guess that's something to learn during this project.

3/365 - river industry

I saw this view yesterday and wanted to pull over and take the picture. However, I was on my way to a wedding, so I didn't. I did note the time and managed to get back here today. Finding a place to park was a challenge. After a bit of a hike, I finally got to take it.
It didn't turn out quite like I wanted. I do like the silhouette, the smoke, and the colors. It's a little grainy and I might have over edited. It's not too bad.

2/365 - first sunday of the year

For the first sunday of the year, I thought I'd do a religious themed photo.

The light from the window was hitting the table in a little spot, so I thought I use it. Other than some cropping and slight rotation, this is how it came out of the camera. I like the warm tones and the slight touch of red from the beads.

I proably should have adjusted the focal point to the face. Overall I'm happy with the result.

First 365 entry

On New Year's eve my cousins DD and Brink and I sit down to reflect on the past year and set goals (not resolutions) for the upcoming year. This year, we also included a look back on the past decade and where we want to be in 10 years. It is amazing to see what we have accomplished and overcome in that amount of time.

DD keeps sea shells from her travels with her daughter in a glass topped display coffee table. After banging pots and pans on the front porch, I got out a few of the shells to take the first pictures of a new year and the 365 project.

I like this photo for its simplicity and shallow depth of field.
The spiral shape of the shell reminds me of how the Maya and other ancients saw time as both linear and cyclical. Time is our past-present-future as well as repetitive seasons, eras, and epochs with similar traits in different forms. So, after reviewing the past and planning for the future, My hope for 2011 is a new season of joy and contentment without too many repeated lessons that I should have already learned. :)
